Faro Airport will have new rules for car access to the arrivals and departures curbside areas. Access for the general public is guaranteed, free of charge, for picking up and dropping off passengers.

All private users intending to drop off/pick up passengers at the airport are entitled to 10 minutes for free.

In this way, dropping off or picking up someone from Faro Airport will be a faster, calmer, and more comfortable experience, as users will be able to stop next to the terminal itself.

The idea, however, is to discourage repeated curbside use and, as such, there will be a charge for the third time of use within 24 hours. Public buses will not be charged. Taxis dropping off passengers will not be subject to any fees if they use the bus lane in departures.

Taxis collecting passengers will remain at the space currently available for this purpose, which will have reserved access for valid permit holders. Tourism buses and hotel shuttles will have their own spaces suitable for airport access (parks P5 and P6 respectively). What DVLA driving licence paperless change can mean for car hirers abroad this summer

Holidaymakers are being warned to expect a summer of car hire disruption after it emerged that the DVLA is to scrap the paper counterpart of driving licences from 8 June, with drivers told to obtain a special online code before heading abroad – or possibly be refused a rental car.

In what it says is a purge on red tape, the DVLA is abolishing the paper counterpart that currently accompanies all UK photocard licences. It is advising drivers to destroy the document (not their paper licence if they still have one) because it will no longer be legally valid. Instead, all endorsements will be held electronically on a web-based service called “Share Driving Licence”.

But fears are growing that the “very muddled” introduction of the new rules will almost certainly lead to some hirers being turned away by car firms this summer. This is because many car hire companies insist on examining the paper document to check on any endorsements or bans.

After 8 June holidaymakers will have to log on to the DVLA website the day before they leave and input their driving licence number and national insurance number. The system will then generate a one-time passcode which the holidaymaker can give to the hire company when they arrive at the desk.

British Airways returns to Faro

UK flag-carrier British Airways has re-launched a direct flight between London Heathrow and the Algarve more than ten years after it first suspended the service to Faro.

British Airways suspended its flights to Faro back in October 2007 after more than 40 years of flying to the region, following the termination of its GB Airways franchise which was bought by easyJet in a multi-billion euro deal.

After more than a decade’s absence, a British Airways Airbus A320 from Heathrow landed at Faro Airport on Saturday (30 March), with a welcome party being organised to celebrate the return of the important route.
Passengers on the flight were welcomed to the Algarve with regional almond cakes and personalised gifts, and the aircraft also received the obligatory flight baptism.

It was further revealed that this summer, British Airways will re-introduce its twice-daily flights to London-Gatwick after two years of single daily flights, as well as re-opening its London City-Faro route for July and August.
Altogether, along with the new Heathrow-Faro route, the airport said the new developments are “highly representative of the attractiveness of the Algarve market and region to the British market and the flag carrier.”

The boosted connection between Faro and London will also facilitate connecting flights for those flying from the Algarve to long-haul destinations on the British flag-carrier.

The Heathrow route will take the form of two return flights per week, on Saturdays and Sundays, with the departure time from the UK being at 4.15pm and the return flight from Faro scheduled for 7.45pm.
The flights have a duration of two hours and 30 minutes.

Availability Crisis to Hit Portugal and Spain This Summer

One of the largest independent car hire companies in Spain has recently announced that they will cease trading.

AurigaCrown have been operating under administration for around two years, however, due to increasing costs and lower revenue, it has been decided that they will cease trading. As a result the availability of hire cars across mainland Spain will plummet. The loss of 15,000 vehicles in the market will cause prices to rise significantly in the coming months according to Economy Car Hire, one of the UK’s leading car hire brokers.

In both 2009 and 2010 there were availability issues due to the economic situation in Spain and Portugal, making it difficult for car hire companies to raise finance in order to equip their fleets. 2012 is in danger of being even worse due to the fall in the number of cars.

Both the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian published articles advising tourists wishing to visit the Algarve in the summer to the fact that they must make their reservations for car hire in advance in order to ensure the prices still low, and most importantly , Ensure that they can have a car available.
